Teen Fashion Trend Alert: Leggings and footless tights

Not since Desperately Seeking Susan, when everyone was channelling Madonna, have footless tights been so huge! Expect to see them everywhere this summer. Yup, that’s right, tights in summer – they are so seriously cool that we can wear them when it’s hot! They go perfectly with the hot summer shade of white. And, let’s face it, they are the perfect cover-up for not-so-smooth shaved legs! You can wear your fave short summer numbers without worrying about shaving and fake tanning! But be warned, there’s a right way and wrong way to wear them.

They work with…

Minis
Short skirts teamed with leggings are hot. You can team them with a short denim skirt; or a short, flirty, flouncy number. They work because it doesn’t matter if you don’t have Gisele Bundchen-esque pins, footless tights make it possible to wear short skirts no matter what shape your pins are in. Ballet flats or flats of any description work best with this look.

Shirt Dress
The shirt dress is another big trend this summer and looks great teamed with footless tights. The tights give this dress style another dimension.

Shorts
Like the mini, footless tights can work really well with shorty shorts. Steer clear of teaming heels with this look as you could end up channelling Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman! Opt for cute ballet flats.

They so do not work with…

Flowing, summer dresses
Those gorgeous, floaty summer frocks that scream lightness absolutely do not work with footless tights – the contrast is far too great to pull off.

High Heels
OK, we are in two minds about this one. If you are going for a total retro ‘80s vibe then leggings with heels can work for you. Where you want to avoid heels and leggings is when teamed with mini skirts. That’s just a bit too retro ‘80s skanky in our books. But if you worship the heel, then team leggings with a skirt or dress that is just above or below the knee.

Bottom Cleavage
Just ‘cos you’re wearing leggings doesn’t mean you can take skirt lengths to new heights, where the simple act of walking reveals a bit of bottom cleavage. Def not a good look.
