SCENARIO:
How do you know when you are a tanorexic?
BB FIX:
Righto, well believe it or not tanorexia is a subject of scientific
interest, and guess what? A study has found that tanorexics may actually
have an addiction to UV rays and experience a high – similar to that
of drug addiction!
The study has found that the UV rays in tanning beds have an effect on the production of endorphins -chemicals released from the brain that produce a euphoric-like feeling in the body. Endorphins are often referred to as our bodies natural morphine, reducing the pain we feel. Like any addiction, tanorexics know getting a tan is bad for them but they can’t help themselves, they want more and more UV hits!
Tanorexia is not an official psychological condition but it kinda makes sense to treat it like an addiction. Think about it girls, your skin getting darker is a sign of cell damage. Your skin is turning darker to protect itself. That’s no healthy glow, that’s your skin cell’s DNA being damaged! There is no such thing as a healthy tan!

Tanorexic warning signals:
- You have a weekly appointment at a solarium
- You think there is no such thing as being dark enough
- You try and cheat the tanning salon system by staying in longer than you are supposed to
- If you use a tanning salon as a form of relaxation
- If you have a pathological fear of SPF30+
HINT:
FAKE TAN – if you really think brown is beautiful
then fake it baby! There are so many great products out there (check
out our Crew Review for some of the best this month). That means you
can get whatever hue you deserve out of a can or tube!
But, faking it can also have you labelled a tanorexic! That would be if you just keep applying and applying ‘cos you never think the colour is dark enough. You end up looking like an oompalumpah – definitely not a good look. Your fake tan should help you have just that hint of subtle colour. One to two applications should do it so after that step back from the can!
