Teen Beauty Problems Solved: Sweet feet really are a treat

Ok, summer is on it’s way and all I can think about is the fact that my body has been wrapped up in trackies, coats, scarves and uggies for basically the whole time! I’m scared to take the layers off without revealing sasquatch legs and talons for toenails! I need a pedicure… and fast! By Annabelle Overton

Sweet feet really are a treat, as you will soon discover once performing this luscious pedicure. Ok, enough with the corny rhymes, but honestly – you will feel like you are walking on clouds after this indulgent experience. Designed with special occasions in mind, this pedi will make you feel like flaunting those toes, be it on the dance floor in heels or at home in Ugg boots.

  1. Soak feet in a warm bath or basin for about 15 mins. Drop a few drops of essential oils (peppermint or lavender work especially well for neutralising any odours) AND RELAX.
  2. Trim toenails with scissors, and then file straight across to achieve a neat, square shape. Be sure to file only in one direction – filing in a see-saw motion weakens the nails.
  3. Buff toenails with a salon-quality buffer to remove ridges and prepare an ideal base for nail polish.
  4. Dab cuticle cream or cuticle oil onto toenails. Massage in and, using an orange stick, gently push back the cuticles.
  5. Now, change the water in your basin. While the tub is filling, massage in an exfoliating foot or body scrub. Alternatively, make your own succulent scrub using equal parts sea salt and olive oil.
  6. Using a pumice stone or pedicure file, gently file the heels and balls of the feet to remove any rough skin. You can also keep a pedi-paddle in the shower and use it every few days, keeping your feet soft and supple all year round.
  7. Dry feet thoroughly and massage in a thick, lavish foot cream. Put thick socks on for as long as possible after this step to allow further penetration of the foot cream.
  8. After removing socks, wipe any excess oils off the toenails with a tissue. Any oil that is left on the nail will cause the nail polish to streak unappealingly.
  9. Use toe separators or a tissue to divide the toes. Apply a base coat to toenails, and leave to dry for the length of three music tracks.
  10. Apply first coat of colour, in three strokes – one on each side of the toenail and one in the middle. Leave to dry for the length of your two favourite songs.
  11. Apply a second coat of color, leaving to dry for two songs. Apply a third coat, but leave to dry for 10 songs to allow colour to develop and prevent smudging.
  12. Use a protective, clear top coat and leave to dry for five songs. Remove toe separators and re-apply top coat every three days for the best results.

TIP: If you want to add some funk and glam to your nails, then try Broadway 3 D Art for Tips and Toes ($11.95). These little funky stick-on nail designs are a great way to glam up a plain old French pink manicure or pedicure, or to add some extra bling to some more out there shades. They’re way easy to use - once you’ve applied your colour coat you stick one of the nail design stickers on your nail and paint a coat of clear over the top. Too easy!
