Movies: "Dream Girls", "Gone" and "Freedom Writers"

Dream Girls

Dream Girls is a gripping film about three struggling singers and their break into show business. Not normally a fan of this type of flick, but I really got into this. Really good storyline, great acting and the singing was amazing. It showed the ups and downs of becoming famous and how determined they all were to make their dream of becoming professional singers come true. The style of the film almost resembles a musical, most of the arguments are sung by the three girls, which makes it quite powerful.

I thought the acting by all of the cast was excellent, and overall I thought this was a stand out film. For those of you who are a Beyonce Knowles’ fans, this is a must see movie. It also features newcomer Jennifer Hudson, who is a hot favourite for Best Supporting Actress at the upcoming Oscars.

Gone

After reading about this film, I gathered that it would be a fairly predictable storyline. It’s based on the adventures of backpackers and the lifestyle they lead while they’re in the Australian outback. They come across random occurrences which are dealt with a little to easily for my liking, such as the disappearance of their friend.

By this stage I could see that the movie was a take-off of the film Wolf Creek, which was based on the backpacker murders and murderer, Ivan Milat. The only difference in this film is that the “bad guy” isn’t a seedy looking, old , Aussie country bumpkin, but a hot-ish American guy. Don’t think his good looks make up for the lack of acting, ‘cause they don’t. Overall the film was really predictable and a waste of time.

Freedom Writers

This was one of the best films I have ever seen! I’m usually not fond of dramas but this was great. It’s based on the true story of a teacher’s struggle with the educational system in America and the effect segregation of colour and race has on a child in a school environment. The way each segregated society and race deals with shootings and murders and overall dangerous situations that they are faced with everyday is unbelievable. It’s really sad to see the vicious cycles they get dragged into and at such a young age. This movie was a real eye opener to me and made me feel grateful that I can go to the shops without an escort for safety and without the fear of being shot at or stabbed.

I was in tears half the time and I hardly ever cry when I watch movies, except “Dumbo”, that elephant movie was sad!
