Such A Pretty
Girl by Laura Weiss
Pocket Books
A taboo topic - paedophilia - is covered through the eyes of a victim in this gut- wrenching and shocking book.
Meredith's father, convicted of sexually abusing her, is released from prison, only to be welcomed back into the family home by her mother. In a play for happy families her mother refuses to acknowledge what her father has done and refuses to see how much damage her daughter has suffered.
Picking herself up almost instantly, trying profusely to rise above her awkward and reputation tainting situation, Hannah immersed herself in a list of constructed rules that make up the story line of the book. While each chapter is highlighted by a new and innovative beauty tip further titled by an expression and cause for emotion, you cant help but empathise with this girl who could quite honestly be you in a rough time.
This is a no holes barred look at what something like this can do to a person. Whilst it covers a very dark subject it is also light and uplifting. Despite zero support from her mother, Meredith does fight back and ultimately wins her fight for survival.
